“Unbroken” was inspired by a young girl in a summer music camp where I taught, who was physically handicapped and sometimes felt ridiculed or ostracized by the other girls there, yet still managed to retain this amazingly upbeat, confident and positive demeanor, focusing on her strengths and not allowing limitations to define who she was. By the end of the two weeks, she became one of the most popular kids at the camp.

Everyone has gone and left me
Sitting all alone with only the trace of a smile
I had saved just to show them that I remain unbroken
All their games and all their taunting
Only serve to make me stronger than they’ll ever know
No, I won’t let them see me crying inside
‘Cause when I dream, I can do anything
I have no chains to hold me down
I am free, I am beautiful
I am not what they see, how I long to be
Just a girl who lives in a place
Where no harsh words are spoken
Until then, my spirit remains
Unbroken
Careless laughter cuts so deeply
How I wish that they could see me through different eyes
Recognize we are just the same inside
Maybe there’s a place somewhere
All his children happy there, and these walls built of fear
Disappear, they will stand between us no more
‘Cause when I dream, I can do anything
I have no chains to hold me down
I am free, I am beautiful
I am not what they see, how I long to be
Just a girl who lives in a place
Where no harsh words are spoken
Until then, my spirit remains
Unbroken
‘Cause when I dream, I can do anything
I have no chains to hold me down
I am free, I am beautiful
I am not what they see, how I long to be
Just a girl who lives in a place
Where no harsh words are spoken
Until then, my spirit remains
Unbroken
